Become a Responsible Gun Owner With These Tips

When used safely, guns can provide excellent protection or be used for recreation. When used the wrong way, a gun can turn into a deadly mistake. Follow these tips for gun safety and become a better gun owner today.

1. Point the Gun in a Safe Direction

This is the most important guideline when it comes to gun safety. Never, ever aim your gun at something that you don’t want to shoot.

2. Stay Away From the Trigger

When you’re carrying a gun or checking out the sights, keep your finger away from the trigger. Until you’re ready to shoot the gun, your finger should remain outside of the trigger guard. Right after you shoot, your finger should return to the same place.

3. Always Assume the Gun is Loaded

Even if you’ve been told by someone you trust that the gun is not loaded, you should still always act as though it is. Check out the gun yourself - you may offend your pal, but you may also save a life.

4. Familiarize Yourself With the Gun

When you own a firearm, you should know exactly how it works. Take the necessary time to learn how your gun operates and what its features are. This isn’t something you should wait to learn until right when you’re about to shoot.

5. Know Your Target

Before you shoot something, you should make the conscious decision to shoot it. What are you shooting? Why are you shooting it? Is there anything between you and your target? What’s beyond the target? These details matter - pay close attention to them.

6. The Safety Mechanism Isn’t Reliable

Yes, it’s there for a reason, but you should never blindly trust a gun’s safety mechanism. Many guns have this feature to prevent it from firing. However, the feature is not 100% reliable. When it comes to guns with safety mechanisms, you still need to follow the other rules of gun safety, especially keeping the gun pointed away from anything that isn’t your target.

7. Don’t Shoot at Water

This sounds odd - if there’s nothing in the water, why can’t you shoot at it? Sounds reasonably safe, right? Wrong! Think of water as a hard surface - yes, you can jump into it and be fine, but the density of water makes it dangerous to shoot. Bullets often ricochet off water, flying in a random direction.
