Health and Beauty Tip

If you don't have time to do your nails, try this: remove any nail polish, soak your nails in lemon juice to get rid of stains, then use a nail buffer for a quick shine.

Police officer breastfeeds quake orphans

JIANGYOU, China (UPI) -- A Chinese police officer, who is the mother of a baby, has become a national heroine for breastfeeding infants separated from their mothers by the earthquake.

Jiang Xiaojuan continues to feed two babies for women whose milk stopped from the trauma of the earthquake or the physical difficulties immediately afterwards, CNN reported. At her busiest, she was feeding nine.

"I am breastfeeding, so I can feed babies," she said. "I didn't think of it much. It is a mother's reaction and a basic duty as a police officer to help."

One newspaper hailed her as "China's Mother No. 1." But she says everyone in the quake zone tried to do what they could to help those who were injured, orphaned or left homeless.

The official death toll for the May 12 7.9-magnitude earthquake is 51,000 with about 29,000 people missing. Thousands of children are believed to have been orphaned.

Jiang's own son is being cared for by his grandparents while the earthquake emergency lasts.

It's Bride Month

Time is running so fast. I just didn't notice that I am almost one month here in Las Vegas. I'm in a different world but I am quite adjusted to the place already. There are also good things in this place. of course, we cannot avoid bad things too.

I am happy to see my sister and relatives here like my two cousins whom I didn't meet for I guess 20 years. Blood is always thicker than water. Even though I have not met them for these long years but still, the memories that I had with them since I was still a kid is still always there.

I am very happy to see them here especially to see spend time with them together. I had so much fun here in Las Vegas especially if I go with my cousin Ann who is a singer/entertainer here in Vegas. They are very accomodating and good people.

It's the first day of the month. The bride month as it is called. So let's welcome this month with warm heart. May you start this month with full of blessings and graces.

wish to write more things here,,but i am always tired with my escapades...hopefully when my vacation is over, I can give you more updates from time to time..

How did Claudius become emperor?

Claudius was the fourth Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, ruling from January 24, 41 to his death in 54. The first Roman Emperor to be born outside Italy, he was considered a rather unlikely man to become emperor. as he was reportedly afflicted with some type of disability.

However, this infirmity may have saved him from the fate of many other Roman nobles during the purges of Tiberius and Caligula's reigns. His very survival led to his being declared emperor after Caligula's assassination, at which point he was the last adult male of his family. Despite his lack of political experience, Claudius proved to be an able administrator and a great builder of public works. His reign saw an expansion of the empire, including the conquest of Britain.

Big Secret

In the 1970's, before women were allowed to sign up for combat duty, a man was bragging to his friends about how his sister disguised herself as a man and was able to join the army.

"But, wait a minute," said one listener, "She'll have to dress with the boys and shower with them too. Won't she?"

"Sure," replied the man.

"Well, won't they find out?" asked his friend.

The man shrugged and replied, "But who will tell?"

Where were the Xanadu houses?

The Xanadu Houses were a series of experimental houses built to showcase computers and automation in the home. The architectural project began in 1979, and during the early 1980s three houses were built in Kissimmee, Florida, Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, and Gatlinburg, Tennessee in the United States.

The houses were notable for being built with polyurethane insulation foam rather than concrete, for easy, fast, and cost-effective construction, as well as for being ergonomically designed, containing some of the earliest home automation systems. The last of the houses were closed and demolished in 2005.

Study: Oregano oil works as an insecticide

ALGIERS, Algeria (UPI) -- Algerian scientists say they've found oregano oil works as well as synthetic insecticides to combat infestation by a common beetle found in stored cereals.

The researchers say not only does oregano oil work well in fighting infestations of the beetle Rhizoppertha dominica, but it has none of the associated side effects of synthetic insecticides on the environment.

Oregano, a member of the Lamiaceae family of plants, has been known to be a natural insecticide by apparently inhibiting egg laying and larval development. But the researchers said their study marks the first time oregano oil has been looked at as a viable alternative to synthetic insecticides.

Chahrazed Boutekedjiret and colleagues from Algeria's National Polytechnic School identified 18 components in oregano oil that combat pests and found the greater the concentration of the oil used, the more effective it was.

"It is feasible that, in the near future, these natural insecticides will replace synthetic insecticides and add considerably to more environmentally friendly insecticides on a large scale," said Boutekedjiret.

The findings are reported in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.
