Help for Damaged Hair

Health and Beauty Tip

Give your hair time to repair itself. Keep the heat off by letting your hair air-dry as often as possible. If you must use a hair dryer, use a nozzle to put some distance between you and the dryer's heat.

New moms tested for HIV infection

LONDON (UPI) -- Hundreds of new mothers in Britain are being tested for the HIV virus after learning the doctor who delivered their babies has the deadly virus.

Women who had Caesarean section births at two hospitals in Essex were sent letters urging the tests to determine whether they contracted HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, The Daily Mail reported Friday.

Tracy Cause, 33, from Leigh-on-Sea, said she found it unbelievable that someone working with mothers and babies could be infected with HIV and potentially passed along the virus.

"The letter from the hospital said they were aware it could be upsetting but that doesn't even come close," Cause said.

Basildon Hospital in Essex sent 126 warning letters and 66 were mailed to patients at Southend Hospital.

The doctor worked at both of the hospitals between 2006 and 2007 but reportedly was moved to a "risk free" role, the newspaper said.

Dr. Stephen Morgan, Basildon medical director, said, it was "rare" for an infected healthcare worker to infect a patient.

A Health Protection Agency spokesman said patients were being asked to contact a helpline for a "consultation where they will be offered advice, counseling and a blood test."

What powers did Billy Batson gain when he said his magic word?

When newsboy Billy Batson spoke the anagrammatic magic word "Shazam!" to transform himself into the mighty Captain Marvel, he gained the wisdom of Solomon; the strength of Hercules; the stamina of Atlas; the power of Zeus; the courage of Achilles; and the speed of Mercury.

What happened to Thor's Oak?

Thor's Oak was an ancient tree sacred to the Germanic tribe of the Chatti, ancestors of the Hessians, and one of the most important sacred sites of the pagan Germanic peoples.

The tree stood at a location near the village of Geismar, today part of the town of Fritzlar in northern Hessen, and was the main point of veneration of the Germanic deity Thor. Its felling in 723 A.D. marked the beginning of the Christianization of the non-Frankish tribes of northern Germany.

Sect mothers may face hard choice

ELDORADO, Texas (UPI) -- Branding a West Texas polygamist sect an abusive environment, officials may tell the sect's mothers they must choose between their children and their religion.

Some lawyers said this edict could mean women would never be able to return to the Yearning for Zion ranch in Eldorado, The Dallas Morning News said Thursday.

Other experts said adults who have tolerated underage "marriages" of girls to older men might have forfeited rights to raise their children.

In advance of court hearings scheduled to begin Monday, Child Protective Services has drafted 10 goals and 14 tasks that parents will have to work toward in order to regain custody of their children.

CPS is proposing to give parents until next April to "provide a home free of persons who have or will abuse" children and "demonstrate the ability to protect the child(ren) from sexual abuse."

Global warming may increase kidney stones

Global warming may increase kidney stones
DALLAS (UPI) -- U.S. urologists say rising global temperatures might lead to an increase in kidney stones.

The study, presented Tuesday in Orlando, Fla., during the 103rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association, shows kidney stone disease, already linked with dehydration in warmer climates, will be exacerbated by global warning.

As a result, scientists said the prevalence of kidney stone disease will increase, along with the costs of treating the condition.

The southern United States is considered "the stone belt" because it has higher incidences of kidney stones. The researchers said rising global temperatures could expand that region with the fraction of the U.S. population living in high-risk stone zones predicted to grow from 40 percent in 2000 to 50 percent by 2050. That could lead to an increase of one to two million lifetime cases of stone disease.

The cost associated with treating kidney stone disease could climb as high as one $1 billion annually by 2050, representing a 10 percent to 20 percent increase over present-day estimates, the researchers said.

The study, led by Dr. Margaret Pearl of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, was reported in the April issue of the Journal of Urology.

Victim often knows sexual attacker

DURHAM, N.H. (UPI) -- A University of New Hampshire study shows that the vast majority of incidents of unwanted sex on campus are perpetrated by someone the victim knows.

More than 2,400 undergraduate students were surveyed in the 2005/2006 academic year, with previous student surveys conducted in 1988 and 2000.

"Colleges and universities around the country find this same percentage, yet the stereotype remains that the perpetrator is a stranger," the study said. "We need to continue to educate the campus community that acquaintances are most likely to be the perpetrators against women."

Overall, unwanted sexual contact occurs where students live, in the context of social events, and often alcohol is involved, the study said.

Of the female victims surveyed, 85 percent report that someone they know committed unwanted sexual intercourse.

Seven percent reported having unwanted sex themselves, while 25 percent reported unwanted sexual contact, the study found.

Copies of the study are available at: unh.edu/news/docs/2006unwantedsexualexperiences.pdf.

Change needed in end-of-life dementia care

MILTON KEYNES, England (UPI) -- British researchers say many improvements are needed in the care provided to people in the final stages of dementia.

Open University Professor Jan Draper and Clinical Nurse Specialist Deborah Birch reached that conclusion after reviewing 29 published studies conducted in nine nations during the past 10 years.

"We must act now to stop people with dementia from suffering from protracted, potentially uncomfortable and undignified deaths" said Draper. "Our review has reinforced the importance of providing appropriate palliative care to individuals suffering from end-stage dementia and clearly identified some of the barriers to extending such provision."

The recommendations include: communicating the diagnosis of dementia in a sensitive way; acknowledging the potential influence on treatment decisions on the beliefs and values of members of the healthcare team; and reconsidering aggressive medical treatments that have limited benefits and might cause further discomfort to dying patients.

The review appears in the Journal of Clinical Nursing.

Avoiding Hassle Calls

I really hate to answer our phone especially from telemarketers. I even asked one before about asking his name and where he get my phone number. It really irritates me when he said that they are not allowed to tell their names but they know my full name and address!!!

"Who Just Called", the question from my husband if he hears me getting angry over the phone. I just visited whojustcalledhere.com. How I wish that we also have the same service in Germany. People here in the States are so lucky to have service like "No Call List" from website like Whojustcalledhere. They also provide the so called "Reverse Phone Lookup Service", which I think to be a good one.

I recommend to you guys especially here in USA to check this site for more infos!! Avoid disturbing phone calls now!!

In Germany, a lot of Telemarketers are always calling our home. I thought it is only in Germany. I am currently in Las Vegas visiting my sister and relatives. I was also surprised when my brother-in-law received lots of calls from telemarketers. He even said sometimes Who's Number Is This???.

I believed there is already a solution to this problem. At whosnumberisthat.com, he can have lots of informations like the so called "No Call List Information". He can even block the calls from telemarketers who sometimes bothers him.

If you have the same problems, you can also click their site and register at their no call list program.

Compound might stop cancer progression

OKLAHOMA CITY (UPI) -- U.S. medical scientists say they have discovered a compound that, in laboratory tests, has shown success in preventing cancer.

University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center researchers said the compound, which still faces several rounds of clinical trials, successfully stopped normal cells from turning into cancer cells and inhibited the ability of tumors to grow and form blood vessels.

If successful tests continue, researchers eventually hope to create a daily pill that would be taken as a cancer preventive.

"This compound was effective against the 12 types of cancers that it was tested on," said Doris Benbrook, the study's principle investigator. "Even more promising for health care is that it prevents the transformation of normal cells into cancer cells and is therefore now being developed by the National Cancer Institute as a cancer prevention drug."

The synthetic compound directly targets abnormalities in cancer cell components without damaging normal cells, researchers said. The disruption causes cancer cells to die and keeps tumors from forming.

Benbrook and her team have patented the discovery and hope to start clinical trials for the compound within 5 years.

Time To Laugh

Good News, Bad News

An old man visits his doctor and, after a thorough examination, the doctor tells him, "I have good news and bad news. What would you like to hear first?"

The patient answers, "Well, give me the bad news first."

"You have cancer, I estimate that you have about two years left," the doctor says.

"That's terrible! In two years, my life will be over!" the patient cried. "What kind of good news could you probably tell me, after this?"

The doctor says, "You also have Alzheimer's. In about three months you are going to forget everything I told you."

No More MC Donald's-Very Bad Experience

I just want to share this very bad experience we had in MC Donalds last night here in Las Vegas. well to be specific that was past midnight, around dawn today already. I know that MC Donalds is a very reputable and trustful company around the world. You can find it everywhere. I know that it is a very good company.

This experience we had last night or this dawn time with my sister and bro-in-law was just very disappointing. I supposed and would like to say "NEVER AGAIN AT MC DONALDS". I also know how employees in mc donalds are trained to provide excellent and fast service to customers. But last night, I would say, it is a nightmare experience with mc donalds. really very disappointing and frustrating experience.

Well, I am just sharing this experience to burst-out and pour-out my feelings. I was just very disappointed and also my younger sister and brother in law. I believed sharing personal experiences is not bad especially if you are telling "THE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH"

Last night, our car broke down and stopped somewhere in Lake Mead at Las Vegas Boulevard, near a gas station in front of terribles in mc donalds. They also have their the 24hour drive thru service.

I was very hungry while we were waiting for the assistance of my bro-in-laws friend to drive us home. At the same time, the service company who will tow the broke-down car. We decided to go to the 24 hour drive-thru Mc Donald to buy some food because we were really very hungry. Besides it is only some feet away.

While standing at the customer window, me and my sister said that we want some double cheese burgers. The lady said that she cannot sell us some burgers or anything because we don't have a car. I told the lady that our car broke down and it is not running anymore. I even told her that she can take a look at the car in front of Terrible Mc Donalds.

She said that she can't really sell us some burgers. She called her supervisor, I guess and the supervisor said the same.

Due to frustation and dissapointment, my hunger disappeared. The bad thing is that I am still having Migraine until right now which I believe to be the cause of the hunger, disappointment and frustration we had last night of this dawn time.

It was already around 2am as we arrived home this morning after a friend took us home.

MY POINTS ARE:

1. Where is the so called customer service at Mc Donald which is famous around the world for its excellent and fast service to their customers.
2. Is there a law or policy in MC Donald saying that you can't buy anything if you don't have a car in their drive thru service. In fact, we have a car which was broken down and just some feet away from the drive thru.
3. I am just really pouring out how I felt until now because I am just very disappointed and frustrated which I believed to be the cause of my Migraine until now while I am writing this post.
4. My very point is that, I hope that MC Donalds needs to train more their employees what really customer service is.

I will still continue this post soon because until now, I am already vomitting due to my bad Migraine..

see you soon!!

When was Chinese soap so popular?

A few years back, a Chinese soap hit it big with consumers in Asia. It was claimed in ads that users would lose weight with Seaweed Defat Scented Soap simply by washing with it. The soap was sold in violation to the Japanese Pharmaceutical Affairs Law and was banned.

Reportedly, the craze for the soap was so great that Japanese tourists from China and Hong Kong brought back large quantities. The product was also in violation of customs regulations. In June and July 1999 alone, over 10,000 bars were seized.

Mammogram, not biopsy, for breast lesions

SEATTLE (UPI) -- U.S. researchers say a woman with benign-looking breast lesions should not get not a biopsy but a follow-up mammogram.

In a study published in American Journal of Roentgenology, researchers said six-month short-interval follow-up diagnostic mammogram had an 83 percent sensitivity rating -- meaning a relatively high proportion of true cancers were being identified, with a low proportion of cases mistakenly deemed benign.

"Because the probability of cancer is so low, we don't want to put the patient through an unnecessary biopsy, which is an invasive procedure that increases both patient anxiety and medical costs," study lead author Erin J. Aiello Bowles of the Group Health Center for Health Studies in Seattle said in a statement.

The study included 45,007 initial short-interval follow-up mammograms. In the study, 360 women with "probably benign" lesions were diagnosed with breast cancer within six months, and 506 women were diagnosed with cancer within 12 months.

The approximately one out of a 100 probably benign lesions linked to a cancer diagnosis within the year points to a need to monitor these patients, because "we want to detect the cancers as early as possible," Bowles said. After the six-month diagnostic mammograms, follow-ups should continue for the next two to three years "until long-term stability is demonstrated."

trivia for today

When is a dresser not a dresser?

A dresser is a piece of furniture, which is similar to a sideboard, but also has shelves above for storing and displaying crockery. This is not to be confused with a chest of drawers, a piece of furniture which has multiple parallel, horizontal drawers stacked one above each other, which is also known (especially in North American English) as dresser or bureau.

Drug may shrink breast cancers

HOUSTON (UPI) -- A drug that targets cell surface receptors may shrink breast cancer tumors in six weeks, a U.S. scientist reports.

Dr. Angel Rodriguez of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston says the drug -- a tyrosine kinase inhibitor known as lapatinib -- could decrease tumor-causing breast cancer stem cells in women receiving treatment given before primary surgery. Rodriguez and colleagues studied 45 patients with locally advanced breast cancer in which the gene HER-2 was over-expressed.

The patients received lapatinib for six weeks, followed by a combination of weekly trastuzumab and thrice-weekly docetaxel, given over 12 weeks, before primary surgery. Biopsies were performed at the time of diagnosis and also after six weeks of lapatinib and cells from the tumors were obtained and analyzed.

"We saw significant tumor regression after six weeks of single-agent lapatinib," Rodriguez said in a statement. "Bi-dimensional tumor measurements showed a median decrease of minus 60.8 percent." The findings are being presented at the sixth European Breast Cancer Conference in Berlin.

Travelling Australia

I always love to travel. If only given all the resources to travel around the world, I would always love to do so. I am presently in Las Vegas flying from Germany. I am staying here for two months.

Next year me and my husband are planning to visit Philippines. While in the Philippines, we also plan to visit some near cities and countries like Sydney, Australia, Singapore and Thailand. Since we don't have any relatives in that place, we need to find a place to stay.

While browsing the net, I found cheaperthanhotels.com.au. They offer serviced apartments which are good value versus hotels. They also offer apartments for big families or groups. The good thing is that, it has also self catering facilities for a very cheaper price compared to hotels.

I would be very happy if I can also visit cities in Australia like Melbourne, Brisbane and , Perth.

Are you planning to travel to Australia too?? Visit and book now at Cheaperthanhotels and find the best deal of your choice for as little as $19!!!

Enjoy your travel!!

SILENT KILLER: Nightmare!!

I got this forwarded email in my inbox from a dear friend .....wish to share and give some infos to all my friends out there....please read!! it might help and prevent it the earliest time!!

SILENT KILLER: What u need to know about NIGHTMARE or BANGUNGOT & some realities Got this information from a US-based pharmacist who is a cousin of a colleague. It seems only MALES are afflicted with this.

We had a co-staff/driver from FAO who died last month from supposedly BANGUNGOT-- leaving a housewife and 3 very young kids.

IMPORTANT: Never go thirsty when going to bed and besure you have plenty of water during your 8-hour rest.Bangungot has killed a male nurse of UERMMH. It is sudden death in adults which cause them to die while sleeping. Many theories have been put forward as its cause. However, here is an article which sheds somelight to the cause of this malady.

Please read on:Article from THE PHILIPPINE STAR: The reported cause of actor Rico Yan's death is nightmare or bangungot. Medical investigators in China , Japan and several Asian countries who performed autopsies on persons who died from "acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis" found out that the majority of them had eaten NOODLES as their supper.

This was a startling finding. However, it wasn't the noodles that caused nightmares but DEHYDRATION. Imbibing even with a few drinks of alcohol or just eating noodles immediately before bedtime compound this on an empty stomach will trigger an electrolyte imbalance and other factors that causes a person to dehydrate or lose water.

It is therefore advisable for a person to take several glasses of water before bedtime if he had a few or several alcoholic drinks. Avoid eating noodles before bedtime, but if you can not avoid it, all ow at least two hours for the body to digest the noodles before hitting the sack and drink plenty of water. The most important thing is, never go thirsty when going to bed and be sure you have plenty of water during your 8-hour rest.

PLEASE PASS TO YOUR FRIENDS!

2 women becoming bishops in Australia

MELBOURNE (UPI) -- Barbara Darling, ordained one of Australia's first female priests in 1992, is about to become the second female bishop in the Church of England in Australia.

Darling is scheduled to be consecrated in Melbourne May 31, nine days after Kay Goldsworthy is to be consecrated in Perth, The Age reports. The Melbourne Diocesan Council announced Darling's appointment Thursday night.

She is to be the diocese's fourth assistant bishop with an area of responsibility for diocesan services, including hospital chaplaincy and children's and youth ministries. After the meeting, there was a celebration in a nearby hotel bar. "I wept tears of joy," said Muriel Porter, who filed a legal challenge last year, forcing the church to consider naming women as bishops.

Darling said she is glad she and Goldsworthy are moving up in tandem. "At the moment there are a lot of unknowns," she said. "But all the way along God has sustained and strengthened me, and provided support."

Cover up Dark Circles

Health and Beauty Tip

Make your concealer more effective by checking the color of the dark circles under your eyes first. If they're gray, apply a soft pink eyeshadow to the dark area before you put on your concealer. If they're more bluish, use light peach eyeshadow. Also, don't use concealer that's too light (two shades or more lighter than your natural skin tone), and don't lay it on too thick ... that can make the rest of your face look too dark.

Possible genetic link to obesity found

LONDON (UPI) -- British and other scientists say they've discovered a gene sequence that is linked with weight gain and a tendency to develop type 2 diabetes. The researchers say their findings also show the gene sequence is significantly more common in those with Asian Indian rather than European ancestry.

The study, funded by the British Heart Foundation, could lead to better ways of treating obesity, researchers said. Scientists from Imperial College London and other international institutions discovered the sequence is associated with a nearly 1-inch expansion in waist circumference, a 4-pound gain in weight, along with a tendency to become resistant to insulin, which can lead to type 2 diabetes.

The sequence is found in 50 percent of the U.K. population. "Until now, we have understood remarkably little about the genetic component of common problems linked with obesity, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes," said Imperial College London Professor Jaspal Kooner, the paper's senior author.

"Finding such a close association between a genetic sequence and significant physical effects is very important, especially when the sequence is found in half the population.? The study is detailed in the journal Nature Genetics.

Finally Arrived in Las Vegas

Yesterday was my flight from Munich, Germany going to Las Vegas. The day before, that was Friday of course we went to Hohenfel's German American Feast. We had a great evening while seeing some friends there. We went home around 10:00 pm already. As Saturday will be my trip and we have to wake up so early, I tried to go to bed as early as 11:00pm but I couldn't. I just don't know if its because of excitement or maybe because, I was used to go to sleep so late always.

Me and my husband, woke up around 3am yesterday. We drove to Munich around 5:00am to make it sure that we will make it on time for check-in....and we are really very early because my flight was delayed for almost 2 hours...instead of leaving 10:05, Delta airlines leave almost about 12:00 noon time..huh!! so long hours of waiting...there were funny things that happened yesterday..hope to share it with you next time..

Since I have a stop-over at Atlanta International Airport, I have to wait again for almost 4:00 hours there. The trip from Munich to Atlanta was more than 10 hours....I got some muscle pains now because of too much sitting.

Boeing 767 was a huge plane and we really have a pleasant trip. The only bad thing was there was no meal from Atlanta to Las Vegas, so I took my snack in a fastfood in Atlanta Airport..

The trip from Atlanta o Las Vegas was around 4 hours which was not too bad. at that time, I was really feeling so tired. My sister and her husband picked me up in las Vegas Airport. They drove me quick around the city. I was really amazed by the lights on the streets. We headed to Ceasar's Palace and I took my dinner there.

I want to post some pix here but when I click to add pix, its not going..I have to ask my sister later how it works in their laptop...strange!!

I am just very thankful that I had a very nice', safe and sound journey..Thanks to God!!

so to all my friends!! keep reading..i'll update you more next time!!..i just stayed in my sister's house today to have some relaxation!!
bye bye!!

Chastity belts on the rise in Indonesia

JAKARTA (UPI) -- Chastity belts are gaining popularity in Indonesian massage parlors as a way to stop clients and masseuses from getting too close, parlor owners say. A number of massage parlors in Batu, Indonesia, are requiring female masseuses to wear padlocks over their pants zippers to prevent men from bombarding workers for sex, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday. "We had a hard time rejecting this kind of client because they try over and over and over again, persuading our workers with their dangerously sweet words," Doghado Massage Parlor owner Franky Setiawan said. Meutia Fardia Hatta Swasono, minister for the empowerment of women, said bringing back the old fashioned chastity belt is offensive to women. "It is not the right way to prevent promiscuity. It insults women as if they are the ones in the wrong," she said. Parlor sex crackdowns come as traditional Islamic values gain popularity in Indonesia, influencing people to cut back on morally questionable activities including the sex trade, alcohol consumption and gambling, the Times reported.

Health and Beauty Tip

Apple Cider Vinegar

Hold your nose and drink up -- this old folk remedy really works! Drinking a little apple cider vinegar each day helps keep skin supple, break down fat, and makes it easier for your body to digest food properly. A daily dose in water also helps keep down your blood pressure. If you just can't bring yourself to drink it, try mixing it with apple juice or honey first.

May Day

May Day occurs on May 1 and refers to any of several public holidays. In many countries, May Day is synonymous with International Workers' Day, or Labour Day, which celebrates the social and economic achievements of the labor movement. As a day of celebration the holiday has ancient origins, and it can relate to many customs that have survived into modern times. Many of these customs are due to May Day being a cross-quarter day, meaning that it falls approximately halfway between an equinox and a solstice.

ORIGIN

The earliest May Day celebrations appeared in pre-Christian Europe, as in the Celtic celebration of Beltane, and the Walpurgis Night of the Germanic countries. Many pre-Christian indigenous celebrations were eventually banned or Christianized during the process of Christianization in Europe. As a result, a more secular version of the holiday continued to be observed in the schools and churches of Europe well into the 20th century. In this form, May Day may be best known for its tradition of dancing the Maypole and crowning of the Queen of the May. Today various Neopagan groups celebrate reconstructed (to varying degrees) versions of these customs on 1 May.

The day was a traditional summer holiday in many pre-Christian European pagan cultures. While February 1 was the first day of Spring, May 1 was the first day of summer; hence, the summer solstice on June 25 (now June 21) was Midsummer. In the Roman Catholic tradition, May is observed as Mary's month, and in these circles May Day is usually a celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In this connection, in works of art, school skits, and so forth, Mary's head will often be adorned with flowers. Fading in popularity since the late 20th century is the giving of "May baskets," small baskets of sweets and/or flowers, usually left anonymously on neighbors' doorsteps.

Traditional May Day celebrations

May Day marks the end of the uncomfortable winter half of the year in the Northern hemisphere, and it has traditionally been an occasion for popular and often raucous celebrations, regardless of the locally prevalent political or religious establishment. As Europe became Christianized the pagan holidays lost their religious character, They either morphed into popular secular celebrations, as with May Day, or were replaced by new Christian holidays as with Christmas, Easter, and All Saint's Day. In the start of the twenty-first century, many neopagans began reconstructing the old traditions and celebrating May Day as a pagan religious festival again.

Maypole

The maypole is a tall wooden pole (traditionally of maple (Acer), hawthorn or birch), sometimes erected with several long coloured ribbons suspended from the top, festooned with flowers, draped in greenery and strapped with large circular wreaths, depending on local and regional variances. What is often thought of as the "traditional" English/British maypole (a somewhat shorter, plainer version of the Scandinavian pole with ribbons tied at the top and hanging to the ground) is a relatively recent development of the tradition and is probably derived from the picturesque, Italianate dances performed in mid-19th century theatricals. It is usually this shorter, plainer maypole that people (usually school children) perform dances around, weaving the ribbons in and out to create striking patterns.

With roots in Germanic paganism, the maypole traditionally appears in most Germanic countries, Germanic country-bordering and countries invaded by Germanic tribes after the fall of the Roman Empire (like Spain, France and Italy), but most popularly in Germany, Sweden, Austria, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Finland in modern times for Spring, May Day, Beltane and Midsummer festivities and rites.
