A Reader's Request

I got a request in my tag-board from a reader name Art last Feb. 07, 2008...saying this;
"Ruby, I have enjoyed your blog very much. I was in Hohenfels almost 40years ago. Could you PLEASE post a picture of The Schwarzen Katz restraunt on your blog? Thank You VERY MUCH"

Hello Art, I finally got some photos for you from the Black Cat Restaurant or Schwarze Katz here in Hohenfels...

anyway, this small beer house in Hohenfels is the favorite hang-out of American soldiers....it's just some hundred meters walk from our house but never been there..I also really don't want to go insides because guests or people there smoke too much...But since Jan. 2008, it is already prohibited by law to smoke inside the restaurants...so probably next time will try to go inside the Schwarze Katz..

.here it is...sorry done it a bit late...but anyway "Better late than Never"

my beloved Hohenfels..the farthest buildings are already the housing
of the US soldiers and their family..

the real Schwarze Kat..saw today while I went walking..perfect timing!!!

here it is Art, your request is now finally granted!!!
hope you're happy now!!!

EIGHT LIES OF A MOTHER

This is a very touching one...esp. to children ....to all Mothers keep up the good work!!!

This story begins when I was a child: I was born poor. Often we hadn't
enough to eat. Whenever we had some food, Mother often gave me her portion
of rice. While she was transferring her rice into my bowl, she would say
"Eat this rice, son! I'm not hungry." This was Mother's First Lie.

As I grew, Mother gave up her spare time to fish in a river near our house;
she hoped that from the fish she caught, she could gave me a little bit more
nutritious food for my growth. Once she had caught just two fish, she would
make fish soup. While I was eating the soup, mother would sit beside me and
eat the what was still left on the bone of the fish I had eaten, My heart
was touched when I saw it. Once I gave the other fish to her on my chopstick
but she immediately refused it and said, "Eat this fish, son! I don't really
like fish." This was Mother's Second Lie.

Then, in order to fund my education, Mother went to a Match Factory to
bring home some used matchboxes which she filled with fresh matchsticks.
This helped her get some money to cover our needs. One wintry night I awoke
to find Mother filling the matchboxes by candlelight. So I said, "Mother,
go to sleep; it's late: you can continue working tomorrow morning." Mother
smiled and said "Go to sleep, son! I'm not tired." This was Mother's Third
Lie .

When I had to sit my Final Examination, Mother accompanied me. After
dawn, Mother waited for me for hours in the heat of the sun. When
the bell rang, I ran to meet her.. Mother embraced me and poured me a
glass of tea that she had prepared in a thermos. The tea was not as strong
as my Mother's love, Seeing Mother covered with perspiration, I at once
gave her my glass and asked her to drink too. Mother said "Drink, son! I'm
not thirsty!". This was Mother's Fourth Lie.

After Father's death, Mother had to play the role of a single parent.

She held on to her former job; she had to fund our needs alone. Our
family's life was more complicated. We suffered from starvation. Seeing our
family's condition worsening, my kind Uncle who lived near my house came to
help us solve our problems big and small.

Our other neighbors saw that we were poverty stricken so they often advised
my mother to marry again. But Mother refused to remarry saying "I don't
need love."

This was Mother's Fifth Lie.

After I had finished my studies and gotten a job, it was time for my old
Mother to retire but she carried on going to the market every morning
just to sell a few vegetables. I kept sending her money but she was
steadfast and even sent the money back to me. She said, "I have enough
money."

That was Mother's Sixth Lie.

I continued my part-time studies for my Master's Degree. Funded by the
American Corporation for which I worked, I succeeded in my studies.

With a big jump in my salary, I decided to bring Mother to enjoy life in
America but Mother didn't want to bother her son; she said to me "I'm not
used to high living."

That was Mother's Seventh Lie

In her old age, Mother was attacked by cancer and had to be hospitalized.

Now living far across the ocean, I went home to visit Mother who was
bedridden after an operation. Mother tried to smile but I was heartbroken
because she was so thin and feeble but Mother said, "Don't cry, son! I'm
not in pain."

That was Mother's Eighth Lie.

Telling me this her eighth lie, she died.

YES, MOTHER WAS AN ANGEL!

M - O - T - H - E - R

" M " is for the million things she gave me,
" O " means only that she's growing old,
" T " is for the tears she shed to save me,
" H " is for her heart of gold,
" E " is for her eyes with love-light shining in them,
" R " means right, and right she'll always be,
As you put 'em this way, they spell "MOTHER"-- a word that means the world to me.

For those of you who are lucky to be still blessed with your Mom's presence
on Earth, this story is beautiful. For those who aren't so blessed, this is
even more beautiful.

Commandments of Marriage

Is this really true or just a joke!!! Keep reading and wish you
a nice weekend!!

Commandment 1. Marriages are made in heaven.
But so again, are thunder and lightning.

Commandment 2. If you want your wife to listen
and pay strict attention to every word you say, talk in your
sleep.

Commandment 3. Marriage is grand -- and divorce
is at least 100 grand!

Commandment 4. Married life is very frustrating. In
the first year of marriage, the man speaks and the
woman listens. In the second year, the woman
speaks and the man listens. In the third year, they both
speak and the neighbours listen.

Commandment 5. When a man opens the door of
his car for his wife, you can be sure of one thing: Either the
car is new or the wife is.

Commandment 6. Marriage is when a man and
woman become as one; The trouble starts when they try to decide
which one.

Commandment 7. Before marriage, a man will lie
awake all night thinking about something you say. After
marriage, he will fall asleep before you finish.

Commandment 8. Every man wants a wife who is
beautiful, understanding, economical, and a good
cook. But the law allows only one wife.

Commandment 9. Marriage and love are purely
matter of chemistry. That is why wife treats husband like
toxic waste.

Commandment 10. A man is incomplete until he is
married. After that, he is finished..

Bonus commandment story.

A long married couple came upon a wishing well.
The wife leaned over, made a wish and threw in a penny.
The husband decided to make a wish too. But he
leaned over too much, fell into the well, and drowned. The
wife was stunned for a moment but then smiled, "It
really works!"

St. Valentine
St. Valentine

Valentine was a holy priest in Rome, who, with St. Marius and his family, assisted the martyrs in the persecution under Claudius II. He was apprehended, and sent by the emperor to the prefect of Rome, who, on finding all his promises to make him renounce his faith in effectual, commended him to be beaten with clubs, and afterwards, to be beheaded, which was executed on February 14, about the year 270. Pope Julius I is said to have built a church near Ponte Mole to he memory, which for a long time gave name to the gate now called Porta del Popolo, formerly, Porta Valetini. The greatest part of his relics are now in the church of St. Praxedes. His name is celebrated as that of an illustrious martyr in the sacramentary of St. Gregory, the Roman Missal of Thomasius, in the calendar of F. Fronto and that of Allatius, in Bede, Usuard, Ado, Notker and all other martyrologies on this day. To abolish the heathens lewd superstitious custom of boys drawing the names of girls, in honor of their goddess Februata Juno, on the fifteenth of this month, several zealous pastors substituted the names of saints in billets given on this day.

The Origin of St. Valentine

The origin of St. Valentine, and how many St. Valentines there were, remains a mystery. One opinion is that he was a Roman martyred for refusing to give up his Christian faith. Other historians hold that St. Valentine was a temple priest jailed for defiance during the reign of Claudius. Whoever he was, Valentine really existed because archaeologists have unearthed a Roman catacomb and an ancient church dedicated to Saint Valentine. In 496 AD Pope Gelasius marked February 14th as a celebration in honor of his martyrdom.

The first representation of Saint Valentine appeared in a The Nuremberg Chronicle, a great illustrated book printed in 1493. [Additional evidence that Valentine was a real person: archaeologists have unearthed a Roman catacomb and an ancient church dedicated to Saint Valentine.] Alongside a woodcut portrait of him, text states that Valentinus was a Roman priest martyred during the reign of Claudius the Goth [Claudius II]. Since he was caught marrying Christian couples and aiding any Christians who were being persecuted under Emperor Claudius in Rome [when helping them was considered a crime], Valentinus was arrested and imprisoned. Claudius took a liking to this prisoner -- until Valentinus made a strategic error: he tried to convert the Emperor -- whereupon this priest was condemned to death. He was beaten with clubs and stoned; when that didn't do it, he was beheaded outside the Flaminian Gate [circa 269].

Saints are not supposed to rest in peace; they're expected to keep busy: to perform miracles, to intercede. Being in jail or dead is no excuse for non-performance of the supernatural. One legend says, while awaiting his execution, Valentinus restored the sight of his jailer's blind daughter. Another legend says, on the eve of his death, he penned a farewell note to the jailer's daughter, signing it, "From your Valentine."

St. Valentine was a Priest, martyred in 269 at Rome and was buried on the Flaminian Way. He is the Patron Saint of affianced couples, bee keepers, engaged couples, epilepsy, fainting, greetings, happy marriages, love, lovers, plague, travellers, young people. He is represented in pictures with birds and roses.

THE ESCAPE

This post is the continuation of the post I had written last Saturday Feb. 09, entitled

Warning to All Pinays Who Want to Marry Foreigners.

If you read this post you might know then what I am talking to now. ....sorry just don't find time to write it immediately...So last Friday, we finally escaped or let say I helped Ana escape from her misery (is that really misery..just can't find the exact word now, but i guess so).....I already bought our train ticket to go to a certain place here in Bavaria, the state where I also presently live..

I also prepared a travelling bag full of clothes and the basic things she need like bath soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush and a lot more (thanks also to my pinay neighbor who contributed clothes) . She don't have anything with here that day except for a pack bag full of books which she use in the German language course. Her husband stayed at home all the time and if he will see her with a big bag, he might not able to escape. Besides that Ana, said that her husband really don't want to work now. He had his one toe operated last time so he can have a sick leave and don't can go to work. Her husband also told her that he really don't want to work and only want to stay at home watching TV while smoking and drinking.

Ana said that she have a wonderful mother-in-law, whom she help sometimes in the household chores like washing the clothes, grocery shopping and cleaning the house. The money that her Mother-in-law gave to her, she use it for buying bus ticket so she can go to the school. She said that her husband never gave her money. I even saw her wallet without any money except for family pictures.

During the plan escape, I met here in the school where she usually attended... Last Friday was also her last day in the German language course. I waited for her in the school office while she is bidding goodbye to her classmates. All of her classmates there are also foreigners just like her. Some even gave their phone numbers so when she need some help, they might help her too.

I also really appreciate her teachers (who were also my teachers before) who helped her. The secretary of the school also gave here some money aside from the small amount I gave her which she can really use because she even don't have a single centavo....what really a pitiful situation...

On our way to the train station, we were very careful that day because Ana said that her husband will go to the Post office and the post office is near the train station...we're playing like hide and seek because we had to stay to the place where it is not so visible to a lot of people.

Finally we arrived to the place where we also met another Filipina who will finally helped her with all what she need esp. the house where she will be staying temporarily. I thought, once I handed her to this Filipina, I am over since I also want to go walking around the city. But the other Filipina told me that I can go with her so I have an idea too, what's the next thing to happen...

That was really a good idea so I will also know where she will be staying..Until all the paper works were processed for the house where Ana will be temporarily staying, we also showed to her the grocery store where she can buy food and other stuffs she need. Yesterday, the other Filipina also helped her to process the different government offices who will help her situation besides that she also need a translator because she still don't speak good German and her English is also not so good.

I hope that yesterday was a successful day for them as they went to the different government offices. I knew there's a lot of paper works to do... but at least what is important now is that Ana is safe and her coming baby too...also wanted to contact her in the next few days..

It is just a very nice feeling when you help somebody esp. saving their lives....a help that don't expect for any return but simply want to help...a help that comes from the heart!!..what a wonderful feeling!! do you feel the same way???or do you help only somebody because you are expecting for a return..I hope not!!!

wish everyone a nice Monday!!! God bless us all!!!

Saint Valentine

Since Valentines Day is fast approaching..got here the story of St. Valentine..so for those who don't know yet its story..here it is...

The story of Valentine’s Day dates back to the third century.

Under Emperor Claudius of Rome, men were expected to volunteer and join the army to fight in wars. Unfortunately, many did not join because of the pain of leaving their wives and children. Emperor Claudius thought that if these men were not married, they would not mind joining the army; thus, he forbade marriage throughout his kingdom.

However, a priest by the name of Valentine did not follow this new ordinance. He continued to marry couples secretly. One night in a wedding ceremony, Fr. Valentine was arrested, put into prison and was sentenced to death. The priest, despite his condition, remained cheerful as young people came to visit, throw flowers and notes, and show support in his belief in love. One of these young people was the daughter of a prison guard. She would often visit and talk with him for hours. Thus, on the day of his execution, February 14, 269, the priest left his new friend a short note, thanking her for the friendship and loyalty. The note read, “Love from your Valentine.”

Thus, every year on February 14, young people, especially couples, remember St. Valentine’s sacrifice for love and friendship.

Warning to All Pinays Who Want to Marry Foreigners

This is a true story which is a very sad one. ..just wanted to share it with you guys esp. to all Pinays who might want to marry foreigners.... Each and everyone have its own luck. Others might have good luck but others might have bad ones. Well, I am not telling you that you are not going to marry foreigners but this serves only as a guide even a lesson for those who already experienced it. Remember everyone is unique and not all people are really bad..Besides the story of Maria is not always the same as the story of Eva....is that right???hope you agree with me..but then it's up to you to decide....anyway, this post is in relation to my previous post last Thursday..

Last week, I got a phone call from a school institution where this Filipina was taking a German language course. The secretary there already knew me and told me about the situation of this Filipina. Let me just name this Pinay, Ana...Ana is only five months here in Germany and she is three months pregnant as of now...(wow I envy her)..I've been married for almost five years but still did not get pregnant...just waiting for God's grace for me...

Ok let me continue....The secretary told me that Ana need immediate help before everything will be too late. ..I told the secretary of that school that I will be meeting Ana, which happened last Wednesday...and yup I met Ana that day and shared to me about her situation which is really very sad and depressing. She is married to this German guy who is irresponsible, lazy and even don't respect her as a person. His husband even telling her words that are so degrading.

Ana said that she is mentally tortured. She always tried her best to be a good wife but it is nothing to his husband. She do everything in the house like cleaning, washing clothes and cooking too. She said that she is treated like a maid but not a wife. If her husband don't like the food that she cooked, he let her eat everything. He even let her eat food that are almost expired....what a pitiful situation... As I look at her face while telling me about her situation, she looks pale and thin... and pregnant.

She said that her husband was not like that before as she met him in the Philippines. He was very kind to her and his family in the Philippines. They even communicated for four long years, before they got married in the Philippines. After they got married, she was able to obtain her visa to Germany after one year. That was a total of five years knowing each other.

The only bad thing that I can't really stand as she was telling her story was that, his husband wanted to abort the three months old baby in her womb so she can go back to the Philippines...Ana said that his husband is even making a contact to other Filipina at this moment, maybe as her replacement once she will be back to the Philippines. He really wanted to get rid of her. His husband even told her that once he will know that she is making contact and ask for help to anybody esp. for Pinays, he will even kill her. (Talagang nakakatindig balahibo).....such a scary and horrible story.

Those are the reasons why I really want to help her. I want to help whatever I can offer esp. saving the life of the unborn child in her womb. Last Thursday, I have to make a lot of phone calls to contact people and organizations who can offer her help. Thanks God that everything went ok. I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to those people who helped her.

.....to be continued under the title ....."THE ESCAPE".......

Fasching in Breitenbrunn, Germany

We finally witnessed today a Fasching or Carnival in Breitenbrunn, a small town in Neumarkt. My husband read about it in the weekend newspaper. We decided to go there at the last minute. I guess sometimes it is better for us to make a quick decision to go somewhere that planning it ahead. We already woke-up late today. After we ate our brunch, we hurried-up driving to Breitenbrunn since we still don't know if the park place is near or far.

Last year, we witnessed the Fasching in Dietfurth. It is always a Chinese Fasching/Carnival there. It was held this year last Thursday, Jan. 31. I read in the Newspaper that around 10,000 people from different places were there just to witness this fascinating Carnival. They usually have more than 50 groups of participants compared in Breitenbrunn who only have around 20 groups.
We enjoyed seeing the different customes and street dancing during the parade. That was really nice. As usual, I am sharing with you again the photos I took during the parade..You can also see more photos here and here.

Carnival is a festival season. It occurs immediately before Lent; the main events are usually during February or March. It typically involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations.

Carnival is mostly associated with Roman Catholic and, to a lesser extent, Eastern Orthodox Christians; Protestant areas usually do not have carnival celebrations or have modified traditions, like the Danish Carnival. The world's largest carnival celebration is held in Brazil but many countries worldwide have large, popular celebrations, such as Carnival of Venice.

Length and individual holidays:

Depending on the area, the carnival may last from a few weeks to several months. While its starting day varies, it usually ends on the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent. In the Ambrosian rite of Milan (Italy), the carnival ends on the Saturday after Ash Wednesday, and in the area of Eastern Christianity, it ends on the Sunday seven weeks before Easter, since in Eastern tradition lent begins on Clean Monday.

Most commonly the season begins on Septuagesima, the third Sunday before Ash Wednesday, but in some places it starts as early as Twelfth Night or even in November. The most important celebrations are generally concentrated during the last days of the season.

The following holidays, which are all part of the seven days before Ash Wednesday, often have special customs:

  • Quinquagesima, the Sunday, when often a break from the festivities occurs;
  • Shrove Monday or Lundi Gras or Rosenmontag, in many areas the high point of the festivities;
  • Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) or Fastnacht, the high point of the festivities when, according to many traditions, preparations for the parties are made, such as baking goods.
